Spring 2014
Social Psychology - PSYC 7670
Dr. Mark Whatley
Social Psychology was a course that I was particularly excited about taking, as employee motivation and other socially based topics are something I am very passionate about. I learned an incredible amount of information that is helpful not only for my future career in I/O Psychology but in everyday life as well. This course was designed quite similar to the other required courses with a few minor differences.
As a method to cover weekly reading and article assignments, we were required to submit a one page summary critique of the assigned text. Specifically, we were required to critique the theories and ideas, in addition to relating them to the present and future of Industrial Organizational Psychology. Not only did this weekly assignment ensure we understood relevant social theories, but also taught us to determine any shortcomings they may have. For example we covered topics such as Social Validation Theory, Human Aggression, Social Cognitive Theory, and Prosocial Motivation.
For an sample critique please see the file below.

Another substantial part of this course was a group project, in which we chose a topic of Social Psychology and were required to relate it back to Industrial Organizational Psychology. Our group covered employee altruism in relation to prosocial motivation. Specifically, we wanted to determine whether or not employees working in a non-profit setting would be more likely to display altruistic behaviors than employees working in a traditional for profit setting. We created a web page to document our findings.

Research Design and Analysis - PSYC 8000
Dr. Natalie Wright
Research Design and Analysis was a course that enabled us as students to refine our research and data analysis skills that will be an essential aspect of our future careers in I/O Psychology. We completed weekly reading assignments including text and supplemental articles, which were discussed in full. Additionally, we completed weekly homework assignments that were designed to utilize our knowledge and skills within SPSS. There was a total of 10 assignments completed, which were based on textbook information.

Another substantial aspect of this course was a data analysis project. Dr. Wright designed this course to simulate a scenario that we could possibly face in the future. Specifically, we were required to find an existing data set, complete a literature review, complete the appropriate analyses, and complete a technical report of the findings. For example, I utilized a data set from a previous co-worker, which was used to determine employee's level of satisfaction and burnout within a mental health field. I ran multiple correlations and regressional analyses on the data and found that employees within a public mental health setting (rather than a private setting) were more likely to show signs of burnout and dissatisfaction. This project was such a useful and helpful project that definitely prepared me for the future.

Lastly, we completed a total of four take home exams that measured our knowledge of the text and supplemental articles.
For example, the below question is a sample of one included within the first exam.
What does the assumption of independence mean?
a. This assumption means that none of your independent variables are correlated.
b. This assumption means that you must use an independent design rather than a repeated-measures design.
c. This assumption means that the errors in your model are not related to each other.
d. This assumption means that the residuals in your model are not independent.
Too see each exam in its entirety please see the following links below.

Employment Law for HR Practice - PSYC 8400
Dr. Jeremy Bauer
This course focused primarily on equal opportunity law practices and other lawful facets in order to ensure all aspects of employment law were in compliance with recent regulations and requirements. In this particular course we completed weekly text and article reading, in addition to completing a total of five discussion questions pertaining to the text information weekly, which were discussed during each class period. In addition, we also covered supreme court cases that were regarding employment law. Specifically, we were required to create a presentation, and present the information regarding the court case and generate relevant class discussion. For example the court case I covered, Macy v. Bureau, involved a discrimination case based on gender. In addition to the assigned court cases, we were also required to choose a recent EEO law based court case and present the information and generate a relevant class discussion. For example, I covered multiple court cases that focused on employment discrimination based on sexual orientation. This course gave me such valuable tools to ensure employment practices of all types are in compliance with the most up to date laws and regulations with a primary focus on employee safety.
